PLUMAS DISTRICT HOSPITAL NEW SKILLED NURSING FACILITY TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY GROWTH

Quincy, CA – November 14, 2024 – It has been nearly a decade since Quincy’s nursing home closed forcing residents who needed long-term care to be displaced from their home community, often several hours away from family and friends. Plumas District Hospital (PDH) is poised to close this gap in services next summer when doors open on a new skilled nursing facility (SNF) just opposite the main hospital on Bucks Lake Road.

The facility’s primary aim is personalized care for individuals who are no longer able to live on their own, with 24-hour nursing care, social and recreational activities, meals and other medical services, allowing residents and their loved ones to remain close by when skilled nursing services are needed. Facility proximity is an important consideration for family, as their regular involvement improves the quality of life for loved ones in skilled care.

“This facility is a true community project, made possible through the collective efforts and support of our local partners and residents,” said JoDee Read, chief executive officer of Plumas District Hospital. “Our new skilled nursing facility will be a vital resource, providing long-term care that honors the needs of our community, while also opening doors to meaningful career opportunities in healthcare.”

Facility impact extends beyond healthcare by creating stable, year-round employment opportunities; both full- and part-time jobs. Certified nursing assistants, licensed vocational nurses, and registered nurses make up roughly half of these positions, with many other roles in food services, maintenance, housekeeping, and other healthcare support personnel needed as well.

New opportunities to create career pathways for aspiring young health professionals are another byproduct of the facility. PDH is working closely with local educational institutions to facilitate relevant career and technical education (CTE) that prepares local youth and adults for nursing careers while simultaneously providing the needed services.

This skilled nursing facility reflects our ongoing commitment to improving both health outcomes and economic opportunities for our residents.”

Services will be covered mainly through Medi-Cal long-term care benefits, which effective January 1, 2024, no longer considers assets for determining eligibility. The recent change in Medi-Cal benefits to help cover services in a skilled nursing facility or nursing home should help make long-term care more accessible those who need it most.
